Governance and Scheme of Delegation

VIAT is a company limited by guarantee and an exempt charity. The charitable company’s memorandum and articles of association are the primary governing documents of the academy trust.  Responsibility for the schools and for the funds granted by Parliament for providing education in those schools is entrusted to the Board of Trustees.

These Trustees are also the Directors of the charitable company for the purposes of company law.

The Trust delegates certain authorities to each respective Local School Board which are detailed in the Scheme of Delegation.

VIAT greatly value and support the work of the Local School Boards and recognise the significant contribution that excellent governance can make towards raising standards. In order to assist this, the Trust provides support to local governing bodies with governor recruitment, selection and training, along with expertise from a VIAT Governance Lead.  It ensures that local Governing Bodies are well trained and supported by the Standards and School Improvement committees which also report on Key Performance Indicators and areas of compliance to schools on a termly basis.  This includes an annual report on the performance of key groups of students.

Local School Boards make recommendations for approval to the Trust. As well as providing a range of high quality back-up services including school improvement, ICT, HR, Project Management, PR and legal advice, the Trust also provides strategic oversight of financial control and strategy through the Main Trust Board Finance Committee.  The Trust also has separate Audit & Risk and Pay committees.
